Christopher McMains

I’m a 30-something cook, programmer, maybe even someday a blogger.

I worked for a number of oh so Web 1.0 companies in the late 90’s and early 00’s. After several years in the hi-tech industry I felt another calling. I couldn’t take one more day sitting in front of a computer from sun-up to sun-down. I needed to produce something tangible with my hands and not just churn out a few more lines of code that would just end up being rewritten with the next revision. A change was afoot and I only have passion for a few other things in my life and unfortunately I can’t hit Major League pitching so I was left with cooking.

It seemed like a great idea at the time. Go to culinary school, buy a 12 inch tall toque and I’d be on the Food Network and on the cover of magazines hawking my cheap pots and pans in no time. Turns out it’s a lot more work than anyone lets you know before you get started. Actually its grueling, tedious and often painful work. But I realize now its everything I was missing in my programmer life. I love it.

Currently I am a line cook at a restaurant in the Los Angeles area. I have worked in a handful of the more famous restaurants in Los Angeles and am now surprised by nothing.

I read incessantly and have an enormous collection of cookbooks and culinary related tomes. On those rare nights off I enjoy venturing out to Little Tokyo, Thai Town and Koreatown to sample the cuisines.
